The old Marine Inn is coming down today to make way
for the Grand Coastal Resort & Spa development.
Island Coastal Resorts Ltd, the company behind the 72-unit
quarter-share hotel, announced Tuesday that the old building at 1430
South Island Highway was set to begin coming down at 10 a.m.
today.
"On hand will be local residents, Mayor Roger McDonell, members
of council, community and business leaders," said a company
release.
"The demolition of the existing structures will be clearing the
way for the much anticipated Grand Coastal Resort & Spa.
"The Grand is sure to make history in Campbell River as the
finest, first class resort development in Canada's hottest
recreational & retirement area."
The project marks a significant moment in Campbell River's recent
development history. In May, City council approved Island Coastal
Resort's application to rezone the 1.3-hectare (3.2-acre) property
from Commercial Five (C-5) to Commercial Four (C-4) to make way for
the luxury resort, but only after a renewed public debate over ocean
view guidelines and bank stability. The debate saw the emergence of
the new Campbell River Positive Growth lobby group, as well as a new
level of information demands placed on developers by council.
The old Marine Inn has been little more than a shell for several
weeks now, after Island Coastal allowed the local Habitat For
Humanities group to salvage whatever it could from the
structures.
Island Coastal said construction of the new facility is scheduled
to begin this fall, with an anticipated completion date of spring
2009.
